CrowdStrike Will Attend Microsoft Summit
Microsoft has announced that it will hold the Windows Endpoint Security Ecosystem Summit on September 10 to focus on improving Windows security. The event is scheduled two months after a faulty update to its operating system by one of its vendors caused a global IT outage.
CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity company that delivered the bad update, will attend along with other security partners, and government representatives will also be invited.
Protection of Health Care Systems is Key
The July 19 outage impacted millions of Windows computers worldwide, leading to flight cancellations, banking issues, and disruption of hospital appointments and some services. In fact, Fortune 500 companies in the health care sector are expected to suffer the largest direct financial losses from the incident, with estimates nearing $2 billion. In an August 23 blog post announcing the summit, Microsoft stated that the objective is to discuss concrete steps they will all take to improve the security and resiliency of their joint customers.
The tech giant said, “Our discussions will focus on improving security and safe deployment practices, designing systems for resiliency, and working together as a thriving community of partners to best serve customers now and in the future.”

Microsoft Summit May Consider Reliance on User Mode Over Kernel Mode
CNBC reported that an anonymous Microsoft executive told the business news network that one of the key discussion points at the conference would focus on promoting the use of applications that operate primarily in Windows’ user mode rather than kernel mode.
The executive told CNBC that summit participants will explore the possibility of having applications rely more on a part of Windows called user mode instead of the more privileged kernel mode that CrowdStrike’s software currently draws on.
The summit will take place at Microsoft’s Washington headquarters.
